Our story
Dawn comes from real frontline health and safety experience and a simple belief that safety should be done for people, not to them.

Not just behind a desk but seeing and speaking to real people on sites, in factories and workshops, and in warehouses and retail outlets.
We’ve seen the frustration when time and money are invested in safety systems that never quite become part of everyday work and where good people are hurt in the gap between what’s written down and what happens in practice.
That disconnect between paperwork and behaviour is why Dawn exists.
I’m Dawn Simmons, and you might have guessed that ‘Dawn’ is my alter-ego! Throughout my career, I’ve been fascinated by how people engage (and sometimes don’t) with health and safety. That curiosity led me to complete a degree in psychology, with a particular interest in human behaviour and the gap between knowing what we should do and what we actually do.
Dawn grew from bringing those two worlds together: practical experience of health and safety and an understanding of the human behaviour that ultimately determines whether it works. This was never about ticking boxes. It’s about building the kind of safety culture where doing the right thing just feels normal, just like putting your seatbelt on. We build that intrinsic motivation, grounded in behavioural psychology and live research.
It started in 1992, in a home just across the road from Ripon’s Cathedral. That is where the name comes from.
It was also the year the Six Pack regulations landed, when health and safety in the UK moved from following rules to risk assessment. We have spent every year since helping businesses do exactly that.
Dawn is the next step. From understanding risk to using 21st Century technology to help people to ‘do’ health and safety.
